“Kapag nanay ka na dapat mas madiskarte tayo. Kung may naiisip kang negosyo at kaya mo naman i-support, GO ka na agad. Okay lang na mag-fail ka sometimes kasi dun ka matututo at mag-gogrow.” - Jhovy Barrera
Welcome back to our special Mother's Day blog series, where we celebrate the incredible mompreneurs who have turned their dreams into reality. Today, we have the pleasure of introducing you to Jhovy Barrera, the talented and inspiring mom behind JDelicious K8tchen. Get ready to be inspired by her journey as she balances her business, marriage, and motherhood with grace and determination.
What inspired you to become a mompreneur and how did you get started?
Jhovy: "As a former ordinary girl turned mom, my entrepreneurial journey began at a young age. Even in grade school, I loved selling various items in our classroom. This passion for selling continued throughout college and even when I had a job. I dabbled in buy-and-sell ventures and ventured into selling food.
When I got married and became pregnant, my husband asked me to stop working. I became a full-time wife and mom, but I soon realized that I needed something more. When our baby turned one year old and I found myself with a lot of time at home, I decided to try selling online again. I started with random items.
Then, I bought an electric oven with the idea of baking for my family. That's when I ventured into making customized cakes. Admittedly, my early creations weren't perfect, and I couldn't afford to offer free samples due to the expensive ingredients. However, I relied on my knack for sales and began offering the cakes to close friends. I created a Facebook page and shared my creations in nearby Facebook groups. It was the year 2020, amidst the pandemic, and custom cakes gained popularity. With my supportive husband as the delivery guy, my business started taking off."
How did you handle balancing your business, marriage, and parenting duties?
Jhovy: "Time management lang talaga ‘yung paghahandle. Ito ‘yung kagandahan kapag ikaw ang boss. As a home-based entrepreneur, I don't have to worry about paying employees or renting a physical shop. If I need more time for my family, I can easily adjust my schedule. I can choose not to accept orders or take a break when I feel tired.
Even though it's just my husband and me taking care of our child, I always make sure my little one never feels neglected. I prioritize spending quality time with my family, and being home-based allows me to do that without any compromises."
What were the biggest challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Jhovy: "One of the biggest challenges I faced was the increasing competition in the cake baking industry, especially with some sellers offering low prices. It was often stressful. However, that's the reality of running a business; it's not always smooth sailing. During slower periods, I would think of new offerings and research the latest trends in the baking industry. I would use that time to focus on my family and take some rest. Once I felt rejuvenated, I would bounce back into entrepreneurship. It's all about adapting and staying resilient."
What tips or advice do you have for other moms who want to start a business while raising a family?
Jhovy: "Tips…
