”Start a business that you are passionate about. That way it will not feel like work.” - Roselle Machate
Roselle Machate, a remarkable mompreneur, has mastered the art of balancing multiple businesses, marriage, and parenting duties with finesse. Her inspiring journey from being a broadcast journalist to a successful entrepreneur and real estate maven is a testament to her determination and unwavering passion. In this Q&A, Roselle opens up about her motivations, challenges faced, and invaluable advice for fellow moms aspiring to start their own businesses while raising a family.
A Dream Unveiled: How Roselle Machate Transitioned from Broadcast Journalism to Business
What inspired you to become a mompreneur and how did you get started?
Roselle: I grew up watching my parents run their businesses. I remember sitting by the cashier in our fast food and choosing movies to watch in my parent's rental video store. When I was young, I had a different dream though. I wanted to be a newscaster and broadcast journalist. I worked for 2 years in ABS-CBN as a reporter right after college. But I realized, my calling was to do business. The inspiration for my first business was related to my work in the news department: we always had to have coffee since we had to stay up late waiting for news to break. So I opened a coffee shop in Rosario Arcade called Coffeeworks. The business expanded to other areas in Manila, Iligan, Boracay, and Malaybalay. However, after many years, I have maintained only one store as I opened another business Vanityworks Salon. With both businesses operating smoothly for more than 15 years, I decided to jump into another career: Real Estate. So far it has been very rewarding with me getting promoted to Sales Director in 6 months and being the Top 1 Agent in our Team.
Balancing Act: Nurturing Businesses, Family, and Self amidst the Hustle
How did you handle balancing your business, and parenting duties?
Roselle: Having multiple businesses plus an active real estate career can be very challenging at times. I make sure to prioritize which are most important. I also delegate tasks that are not very crucial to an assistant so I can focus on the more essential parts. There are times when I have only a little time for my family so I make it up to them every chance I get. It's important not to lose sight of why we work hard in the first place.
Overcoming Challenges: Lessons in Resilience and Problem-Solving
What were the biggest challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Roselle: It was very difficult maintaining all the branches of Coffeeworks and it did take a toll on me. Thankfully I made the right decision to close down some branches. For the businesses I have now: it is always a challenge to keep and grow your customer base. Just like in any business, you cannot please everyone all the time. There have been moments when we had customer complaints. One time a customer resorted to reporting to a radio station that he was served food that was stale. Instead of speaking with us to resolve the matter, he opted to broadcast his displeasure. To overcome challenges like this is to face the problems head-on and find a solution. As for the challenges of working in Real Estate, I have encountered many "clients" who treat the profession lowly, people who think it is a scam. My answer to this is to send them my awards and credentials to assure them I'm as legit as they come, and that all the projects I handle are all from well-established developers.
Empowering Mompreneurs: Insights and Advice from Roselle Machate
What tips or advice do you have for other moms who want to start a business while raising a family?
Roselle: My advice is to start a business that you are passionate about. That way it will not feel like work. Also, it is important to set aside family time, and always have play dates with your kids, even if it is as simple as just hanging out at home. Don't lose hope if you fail in the business, take these as opportunities to learn and improve. Mistakes are always inevitable. You grow with every mistake you make. If possible, include your family and kids in your business, so they appreciate and learn from it. If my kids don't have school, I bring them to site tours and events. That way, they have a better understanding of what I do, and how we are able to enjoy what we have from my business and profession.
